Quick facts

Countries with more than one capital

Some African countries split capital functions between cities. South Africa has three: Pretoria (executive), Cape Town (legislative) and Bloemfontein (judicial). Eswatini has Mbabane (executive) and Lobamba (legislative). In Benin, Porto-Novo is the official capital but the government sits in Cotonou. Côte d’Ivoire’s official capital is Yamoussoukro, while Abidjan is the economic centre. Tanzania and Burundi have moved their capitals inland to Dodoma and Gitega, while the largest cities remain Dar es Salaam and Bujumbura.

Using the list and quiz

  1. Search for a country or capital, or filter by region.
  2. Sort by country, capital or region.
  3. Print the filtered list or download it as a CSV for a spreadsheet.
  4. Start the quiz for ten random multiple-choice questions.

Worked example

A teacher preparing a lesson on East Africa filters the list to the Eastern region, which shows 18 countries from Burundi to Zimbabwe, prints it for the class, and runs the capitals quiz as a warm-up. Students notice that several capitals — Dodoma, Gitega — are not the largest cities, which opens a discussion about why countries move their capitals.

Names and spellings

Some countries are known by more than one name. Cabo Verde was formerly written Cape Verde in English; Eswatini was Swaziland until 2018; Côte d’Ivoire is the official name in all languages (rather than Ivory Coast). There are two neighbouring countries called Congo: the Democratic Republic of the Congo (capital Kinshasa) and the Republic of the Congo (capital Brazzaville), facing each other across the Congo River.

What the template pack includes
